Growing a Golf Team’s Voice, One Post at a Time

As a student-athlete on the Holy Cross College golf team, I created and managed the team’s Instagram (@HolyCrossGolf now @hccwgolf) presence from the ground up. At the time, we had no digital footprint beyond the school’s website, so I took it upon myself to find the college’s athletic department branding guidelines and design a page that aligned with the school’s visual identity, while still giving the team a distinct voice and personality.

Using Canva, I designed all of the graphics, from player spotlights to pre- and post-match content. Since I was also actively competing, I would schedule or share posts before tournaments began and after they finished, not during actual play. This helped maintain a steady presence online without taking away from my performance on the course. Balancing both roles helped me develop strong time management skills and sharpened my creative instincts under pressure.

Although I was the primary person behind the account, I regularly sought feedback from teammates and coaches. Their input helped shape the tone and direction of the page and ensured it reflected our team’s values and culture. In just one year, we grew our following from zero to over 250, a notable achievement for a campus of fewer than 500 students and a team of just 15 players.

This project is what first sparked my interest in marketing. I taught myself everything through curiosity, trial and error, and a desire to create something meaningful and lasting. Below is a collection of the graphics I designed while managing the account. I’m incredibly proud that my former teammates continued the work and grew the page even further after I graduated.
